Flaxmere College (Te Uru Whakapua)

Welcome to Our High School Satellite at Flaxmere College

Nestled within the vibrant and inclusive community of Flaxmere College, our High School Satellite provides a welcoming space where students are supported to thrive. Young people typically join us in their early teens and remain until the year they turn 18, at which point they transition to Kōwhai TEC to continue their growth journey.

Here, every learner is valued as an individual. We take a collaborative approach—bringing together teachers, therapists and whānau—to create a learning environment that truly meets each student’s unique needs. At the heart of our programme is communication: developing language and expressive skills is woven into every part of our day, from classroom routines to interactive learning experiences.

As part of the senior school, our students build their independence through daily life skills activities, learning practical skills that prepare them for life beyond school. Their learning is shaped by personalised Individual Education Plans (IEPs), co-developed with families and professionals. We also support our students’ futures through PATH planning (Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope) and tailored careers programmes.

Beyond core subjects like Literacy and Maths, our students engage in a rich mix of weekly activities—including Health & PE, Kapa Haka, library sessions, and swimming in Terms 1 and 4. Many proudly represent our school in Special Olympics events such as basketball, bowling, and triathlon.

We are especially proud of our students’ contributions to the wider community. Through a partnership with Re-Source, they volunteer their time to help prepare quality donated goods that are redistributed to those in need—an experience that builds both empathy and real-world skills.

Our students also enjoy the opportunity to be part of mainstream classes at Flaxmere College. Whether it’s creating in Food Technology, exploring creativity in Textiles, or developing movement and teamwork in the college gym, these shared experiences enrich their education and foster meaningful connections with peers.
