Central School(Te Akamatua)
Our Hastings Central School Satellite is an exciting place with two specialised classes dedicated to helping all our students reach their full potential. Students in these classes proudly wear the Hastings Central uniform and enjoy opportunities to join with the mainstream students on their playground at playtimes and lunchtimes. Additionally, students are welcome to participate in the mainstream school’s kapa haka and also in other school activities as appropriate, fostering a sense of inclusion within the Hastings Central School community.
Activities within both classes are designed to promote confidence and independence. Examples include dressing for swimming, navigating playground structures, and bike riding on the school cycle track, as well as the academic side of school life.
Student programmes are structured to combine Individual Education Programme (IEP) goals with the broader Curriculum and Key Competency requirements. Language development and communication are a core focus, integrated into all class activities. Interactive whiteboards and iPads are utilized to support students across all curriculum areas.
A key difference between our classes and mainstream classes would be our use of visuals – e.g. visual schedules, working for cards, communication tools such as core vocabulary boards and other Augmentative and Alternative communication tools such as sign language and electronic talkers.
The Central Satellite is a place where students begin to grow and mature, building friendships and social skills as they relate both with their fellow classmates as well as the mainstream students.
