Heretaunga Intermediate
In the heart of Heretaunga Intermediate, Kōwhai has a two-classroom satellite with around 18 students, although this can vary depending on the needs of the students. It is at Heretaunga Intermediate that students are offered their first opportunity to access specialist technology subjects, such as food technology, music, fabrics, science and hard technology.
Heretaunga Intermediate is an inclusive school, allowing our akonga to be part of mainstream school life while being supported by Kōwhai staff. Outdoor education, cross country, athletics day, and weekly sports sessions are always highlights for our students. Some students choose to attend mainstream school events such as Heretaunga’s Matariki breakfast and cultural performances.
Our mainstream buddy class visits our classrooms once a week to connect with our students and foster friendships. They play board games, read together or play outside in our recently developed playground which includes a large sandpit, swings and gardens. For many students, these visits offer the opportunity to develop and practice communication and social skills with their age-equivalent peers.
Like other areas of our kura, at our Intermediate satellite, we also follow the New Zealand Curriculum, focusing on structured literacy and maths while ensuring we provide rich learning opportunities in all curriculum learning areas.
Heretaunga has a respectful and inclusive culture, and we are welcome in weekly assemblies with the recognition of our students’ successes at school as well as success outside of school. It really is a great place to be!
